A heavenly balm greets visitors when they set foot in the county of Sussex; and residents here are habitual to the soothing silence all around. Serenity is in the air of Sussex County of Delaware in United States. It seems as if life in the towns of Sussex flows at its own pace, almost ignorant of and unconcerned about the maddening race of routine that pervades through pretty much all urban America. Among these towns, Georgetown is centrally placed and a perfect example of how the rural life of the Sussex county in Delaware has glided on for decades now. Apart from the fascinating accent in their voices, residents of Georgetown are a hospitable bunch of happy people, always ready to indulge in a warm dialogue and extend a helping hand to a needy. Georgetown is more than a town; it is a mirror that reflects the way life is lived in this part of the U.S. Georgetown is located right in the middle of Sussex. Quite famously, it is ‘Sixteen Miles from Everywhere’ in Sussex, and this happens to be the title of William J Wade’s historical text on Georgetown.

Delaware’s historical progress starts from the year 1630, when Dutch colonists erected their settlements at Lewes. The next century and a few decades saw some torrid times in the region, with land disputes being the order of the day. In 1775, the Sussex County was outlined on the world map with clear and solid boundaries. Delaware’s famous and very own Mason-Dixon Line demarcated the western and southern boundaries of Sussex County. This was followed by another long period of troubled times for the residents of Sussex, as they had to travel a very large distance and spend an unnecessarily high amount of money to travel to Lewes. On January 29, 1971, a law was passed that attested the proposal to move the County Seat to a central location. The precise middle of Sussex used to be a vast stretch of swampy land, almost entirely unsettled. Ten commissioners were entrusted with the task of purchasing land and erecting a courthouse and jail in the middle of Sussex. A few months after the passage of the law, the State Senate President George Mitchell purchased 76 acres of land. Georgetown was subsequently laid out in a circular area measuring one mile across.

Banana is inarguably the most commonly eaten fruit the world over. It is pretty hard to present attested facts, but fairly reliable estimates and studies mention that the yearly consumption of the different varieties of bananas in the world crosses 55 million tons! Bananas feature in all sorts of diets, from the quick morning fruit breakfast to the evening fruit salad. There are as many as 400 different banana varieties enjoyed by people from across the globe. The Cavendish banana is the most commonly consumed variant of bananas in the United States, and there are not many people who do not like the sweet and creamy flavour of these bananas. For others who do not mind experimenting, there are many banana recipes that can be tried out, involving cooking, baking, roasting and even frying bananas.

Of the scores of banana species in the world, mostly thrive in humid and tropical regions. Warm climate is a basic necessity for the right growth of bananas. Also, banana plantations are water intensive, and this is precisely why the tropical regions are ideally suited for banana growth. It follows that more than a hundred tropical countries of the world are involved in extensive banana cultivation. The primary objective of growing bananas is to use the sweet dessert fruit, although banana fiber and banana wine have become popular of lately. Also, some growers recognize banana plantations as sources of ornamental plants as well. That said, the popularity of the banana fruit is ample reason for most countries of the world to persist in improving the banana yields.

Bananas find extensive cultivation in many South and South-east Asian countries. The warmth of the climate prevalent in these countries serves well in yielding a healthy banana output. India has been a leading producer of bananas, bagging over one fourth of the world productions for many years on a trot. Philippines and China are the second and third placed on the chart of the world’s largest banana producing countries, but far behind the average annual produce from India. Though bananas enjoy widespread popularity in the United States, the production of the fruit is not exactly large scale in the country. Hawaii is the only major banana producer in the United States. Costa Rica in Central America does manage a place in the top 10 list of the largest banana producers, and is a part of the group of nations occasionally referred to as the ‘banana republic.’

Oprah Winfrey is a name that hardly needs any introduction. The lady is an unbelievably endowed cocktail of success. A media proprietor, resourceful businesswoman, super successful talk show host, actor and producer, and a world renowned philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey is a truly multi-faceted personality. Many regard her as the most influential woman in the world, and the fact that she is always in the news for good reasons does more than underlining the claim.

Winfrey lived a troubled childhood. She was sexually abused several times in her early teenage, and even became pregnant at the age of 14. Her child died in infancy. Her relationship with her mother was always turbulent, and she was sent to her father in Tennessee. It was from here that education acquired importance in her life, as her father Vernon prioritized that. She went on to become an honours student and bagged the tag of the Most Popular Girl in her school. She was also a part of the speech team of East Nashville High School, and grabbed the second national position in dramatic interpretation. Her success in oration led to her being awarded with a full scholarship to the Tennessee State University. Oprah studied communication at this historically black institution. She had already worked for a local black radio station called WVOL for the senior year of her high school, and continued the job for the first two years she spent at her college. She started with co-anchoring the evening news show at the radio station, and made rapid progress courtesy her emotional delivery style. Oprah Winfrey’s unmatched and emotionally laden presentation catapulted her to the talk show circuit of the radio channel very soon.

Oprah Winfrey lived a promiscuous life in her high school and college, and also her post college days. After breaking up with her high school love, Oprah went into a relationship with William Taylor at the Tennessee State University. Winfrey even helped Taylor get a job at the radio station she was working at. The relationship is believed to have been a really intense and honest one. However, Oprah’s career orientation spelt an end for the relationship in 1976. Communication and media have been a huge part of Oprah Winfrey’s life, and it can be safely added that the years she spent in her college learning and honing the skills of communication shaped her life.

Chimps, or chimpanzees in more precise terms, have been a breed of animals that has instigated amazement in humans from a long time, mostly because of the surprising commonality between their cumulative behaviour and that of humans. The Pan genus accommodates the two extant species referred to by the single name of chimpanzees. These species are – Pan troglodytes, and Pan paniscus. Though it is not too easy for the layman to appreciate the distinctions between the two species of chimpanzees, the fact remains that chimpanzees do exhibit traits that are strong and disparate enough for them to be categorized into distinct species.

The common chimpanzees are actually those belonging to the Pan troglodytes species, and inhabit regions in the Western and Central parts of Africa. On the other hand, those belonging to the Pan paniscus species are commonly called Bonobos, and are found in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Congo River serves as a division line of sorts, acting as a physical separator between the two species of chimps.

Common chimps exhibit a tendency to live in humid regions. Deciduous rainforests are the ideal breeding grounds for chimpanzees. Swampy and marshy forests are often considered the ideal settings for chimpanzees, and this is attested to a certain extent by the fact that the forests of Central and Western Africa host a large number of chimps. These forests witness pretty humid conditions for a good part of the year. African land belt from Senegal to Tanzania has a considerable cover of forests that experience the suitable living conditions for the sustenance of chimps. Grasslands and woodlands are perfectly hospitable conditions for chimps to thrive, and the land alongside river Zaire provides many such settings. Thus, the Western and Central African region hosts common chimpanzees in appreciable numbers.

The deciduous forests of Africa are rich in varied fauna, and some of it matches the dietary needs of chimpanzees perfectly. For instance, chimps have no dearth of leaves, fruits, seeds, plant bulbs and flowers to chew and swallow in the African forests. Chewed leaves serve as water sponges for chimps, and they eat these leaves as a part of their water dose for the day. Also, there are ample supplies of ants and termites to satisfy the more prominent wants of chimps. The trees of these forests are studded with the temporary homes or nests created by chimpanzees to enjoy a comfortable sleep every night.

With peculiar traits like a temperature that reads an unearthly -40 degrees Celsius in the winters and rockets to 32 degrees Celsius in the summers, and a daylight period spanning over 6 months followed by a dark night of the same time length, the North Pole does not quite qualify as an inhabitable area for ordinary human beings. That said, the North Pole has been a fascinating topic of discussion for mankind for several years. The fact that there are actually two North Poles adds another dash of mystery about the place.

There is a magnetic North Pole, and it is based on the magnetic field of the Earth. This region is slowly and steadily drifting across the Canadian Arctic. And then, there is the geographic North Pole, the place located in the north of Greenland at a distance of about 724 kilometers. The precise location can be conveyed by a geography expert in the form of latitude, i.e. 90 degrees north. To actually get a fair view of the location of the North Pole, one has to use some imagination and view the assumed axis around which the Earth rotates. Obviously, there would be two pints where this axis would leave the surface of the Earth, and these two points will be diametrically opposite with one being at the southern tip and the other at the northern tip. It logically follows from here that the northern tip of the Earth is referred to as the North Pole. In other words, if one were standing on the precise geographical North Pole, there would be no meaning of the east and west direction and all the Earth surface would be below the person.

The location of the North Pole gives rise to another very interesting concept. The presence of a city or state on a particular longitude governs the time standards of the place. However, the North Pole is a unique case with all the longitudinal lines converging on it. To make up for the ambiguity regarding the standard time to be used, the North Pole uses Coordinated Universal Time as the local time. The North Pole is covered with a blanket of ice for a major part of the year. However, the impact of global warming is becoming observable in the form of the reduction of the thickness of the ice cover.

Peanuts enjoy widespread popularity among masses, and this has been so for a very long time. There’s hardly any person in the world who would grow into an adult without being through a childhood studded with memories of spending idle evenings cracking open peanuts and gobbling the contents in a jiffy. Peanuts are so common that not even the most inquisitive of persons would lend a thought to the lesser known characteristics of these little wobbly snacks. In fact, it would be a shaker of sorts for many to be told that peanuts are actually not nuts.

Peanuts are actually legumes, and not found on trees and plants, as is the case with many forms of nuts. Peanut legumes develop and grow under the ground before popping out and advancing to a height of around 60 cm. The cultivators of South America are credited as the originators of peanuts. History has it that the plantation of peanuts began as early 1000 B.C. South Americans carried the peanut plantation further and helped a lot in understanding the nature of these cute little legumes. It is also believed that Columbus came across peanuts in 1462 when he set foot on the island of Haiti. Subsequently, peanuts found a way into India and China. Over the years, peanuts gathered unparalleled popularity and today, peanuts are a part of the cultivation scheme of things in every country. Generally, peanuts are harvested after a period of 5 months after plantation. Growing peanuts is so simple that one can easily do so at home using a suitable container or pot.

Though several peanut varieties have made their name over the years, the American peanuts still manage to keep their position as the real deal, the authentic peanuts! Four variants of American peanuts find extensive usage in candies, peanut oils, peanut butter, and many other peanut derivatives. In America, peanuts are planted in many areas, such as Oklahoma, Texas, North Mexico, Virginia, South and North Carolina. Georgia’s peanut plantations also contribute a major percentage to the total production of peanuts in United States. The scales of plantation, however, have tilted the world share of peanut produce towards producers such as China and India. The two economies gobble up as much as more than 50% of the total peanut production! That said, American cultivators still get the credit for introducing the wonderful little peanuts to the world.

The month of January is a busy month for several established and bussing film makers in the world, and this is because the largest independent cinema festival in the United States, called the Sundance Film Festival is held in this month every year. The Sundance Film Festival witnesses unworldly enthusiasm and excitement from the filmmakers across the globe. Talented film makers dream of being a part of the Sundance Film Festival, and this is evident from the number of entries that the organizers have to scan through every year, and the number keeps on increasing.

The Sundance Film Festival is hosted in Utah, primarily Park City and Salt Lake City. Apart from being a famous winter resort town, Park City gets its glamour from the coveted Sundance Film Festival. It is an absolute art carnival in the month of January as the city rolls its red carpets out for some of the world’s noted celebrities and prodigies. Robert Redford was a resident of Utah, and the founder of this festival. Since the time of its inception in 1978, the festival has always been held in Utah. The first version of the festival was conducted in the Salt Lake City. Three years later, the festival moved to Park City with all its pomp, show and popularity. After more than three decades of fascinating film lovers, Sundance Film Festival is still going strong and finding more takers of the concept every passing year. The popularity of the festival can be well gauged from the fact that it is held simultaneously in four different locations of Utah. Park City is one of the four venues of the festival, and the quartet is completed by Salt Lake city, Ogden, and the Sundance Resort. The different films being showcased in the festival are screened at these four locations.

Park City is home to the Sundance Institute where thousands of film makers and enthusiasts learn, unlearn and relearn the tips and tricks of the trade. The Sundance Film Festival is actually a lot more than just a showcasing of some of the best of the world’s budding film makers. This festival is actually a wholesome entertainment package as visitors get to indulge in a lot more than just cinema. Apart from a rendezvous with the snow covered peaks of the Park City, tourists and visitors can enjoy the carnival spirit and the host of crazily engrossing activities that are a part of the Sundance Film Festival. The organizers make it a point to send a list of all the activities and experiences that are in store for the attendees. After spending a good part of the day in the precincts of the festival venue, all those associated with the festival make it a point to enjoy the vibes of the wonderful resort town in the streets and markets that are dotted by several inviting shops.

Foodies around the world can easily relate to the tantalizing feeling that engulfs the belly at the mere mention of hamburgers. These super delicious burgers are actually modified forms of the good old sandwiches where an absolutely mouth watering cooked patty of ground meat is placed in the middle of the two halves of a sliced bread roll. Hamburgers acquire distinct tastes depending upon the add-ons they are served with, for instance, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and combinations of these apart from many others. A bite of a meaty hamburger with a little helping of some tangy ketchup is enough to unleash a hurricane of hunger juice inside millions of mouths in the world.

Hamburger derives a huge percentage if its name from the German city of Hamburg, and this is not without a reason. Many food enthusiasts around the world contest that the amazing arrangement of beef patties inside bread rolls gained popularity In the 17th century, German ports, especially Hamburg, were introduced to a particularly durable snack called the ‘tartare steak’ coming straight from Russia. There are people who believe that it was actually the Mongol army led by Genghis Khan that engendered the whole idea of beef patties and brought it to Russia, as early as the thirteenth century. If this were to be true, hamburgers can flaunt a food menu presence of as many as 900 years! In the fag end of the 18th century, however, the ‘Hamburg steak’ as the patty sandwiches came to be known at Hamburg, made inroads in the port bars and restaurants of all Germany and Europe. Even New York post side eateries started advertising the Hamburg steak to attract the German sailors. Though the form and ingredients of the hamburger at that time were not quite same as the present day, but those were the times when the name of hamburgers was slowly and steadily being etched on the food walls of fame of the world. The immigration of thousands of German natives who had been habitual eaters of the Hamburg steak to the United States also played a major role in the widespread popularity enjoyed by hamburgers.

In some parts of the world, hamburger might not necessarily mean a sandwich containing beef or pork patties, but then, even in these cases the term refers to a piece of beef, generally salted. This further strengthens the theories of those who attribute the origin of the term to the bread rolls containing beef patties that enjoyed widespread popularity in Hamburg.

Algebra is a tried and tested branch of mathematics, with its roots set as early in the timelines of human civilizations as 820 A.D. This branch deals with the studies of structures, relationships between variables and manipulations of quantity. What started as elementary mathematical manipulation in the earlier times has grown over time into a full fledged branch of mathematics that comprises a major part of the mathematical curriculum in schools, colleges and universities across the world. Many sciences depend on algebra for the derivation of important formulae. Elementary algebra has laid the foundations of the modern algebra that most of the present generation has grown up learning.

Some well renowned historians have contested that the ancient Babylonian priests were the originators of the mathematics of solving for operands of equations, as they are known by in the present times. The idea is that such mathematical treatments were a part of the mathematical research and knowledge body expansion happening at the time of the Babylonian civilization. This leads one into believing that the whole concept of algebra might be as old as 4000 years!

More concrete research throws light on the fact that the word algebra derives from the Arabic word Al-Jabr. Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khowarizmi, a noted Arab mathematician put together a great piece of mathematical literature around the year 820 and named it Hidab al-jabr wal-muqubala. The title when translated means ‘The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing.’ This treatise proposed and explained a systematic procedure to solve linear and quadratic equations, and the tools to do so were al-jabr and muqubala. Al –Khowarizmi used transposition of terms with a subtraction sign to the other side of the equation, and this was referred to as al-jabr. Also, the cancellation of like terms on the two sides of the ‘equal to’ sign of the equation played a major role in the solution of the linear and quadratic equations; and this was termed muqubala. As a matter of fact, there are several references to the title of the book as being ‘the science of transposition and cancellation’, ‘the Book of Completion and Cancellation’ and ‘the book of Restoration and Balancing.’ This cements the idea of transposing and cancelling out as the basis of solving linear and quadratic equations. ‘Al-jabr’ has undergone a change of form over the years, and the science has been popularized with the name of algebra.

Sri Lanka, the beautiful island nation in Asia, has been making rapid leaps in the tourism circuits of the region, and this is ample reason for many people to be interested in knowing more about the country. Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean and lies to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. For those who understand technical jargon, the location can be more precisely specified in terms of latitudes and longitudes; Sri Lanka is between latitudes 5° and 10°N, and longitudes 79° and 82°E. It lies at a distance of around 880 km to the north of the equator. The country is pretty small in geographic size, measuring around 445 km in length and 225 km in breadth.

A more indicative description of the location of Sri Lanka can be presented in terms of its relative location to India. Merely 50 km away from India, Sri Lanka is separated from the Indian subcontinent by Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar. The Hindu mythological epic Ramayana mentions that there was an artificial land bridge created between India and Sri Lanka by Lord Rama. Some historians endorse this piece of mythology, and there are reports of the aforementioned bridge being actually used for travel up to 1480 A.D. After that, however, cyclones led to the depression of the channel and reduced it to a chain of limestone shoals.

Sri Lanka’s geographical location has a lot to dictate in terms of the weather conditions prevalent in the country. Sri Lanka’s climate is tropical and warm. The warmth of the climate is moderated to a certain extent by the ocean winds. However, this means that the content of moisture in the winds is also considerable. The ambient temperatures in the country range from about 17 °C (62.6 °F) to 33 °C (91.4 °F). The relatively higher temperatures are characteristics of the low altitude areas, whereas the central highlands witness lower temperatures.

The fact that Sri Lanka is located in the middle of the Indian Ocean means that the monsoon winds rising from the waters of the ocean, along with the Bay of Bengal have a major influence on the rainfall patterns observed in the country. The monthly rainfall levels in the central highland windward slopes hit the 2500 mm mark pretty regularly. On the contrary, the leeward slopes do not enjoy any considerable rainfall over the year.
